Alfa Mist – (2021) Bring Backs (Live)

Keyboardist/composer Alfa Mist (a somewhat easier-to-pronounce surname than his real name, Sekitoleko) is a true talent who forges his own path. And his music, as evidenced by his new album, only becomes richer musically. Although primarily focused on hip-hop and grime in his youth, he quickly absorbed the rich history of jazz and fully incorporated it into his own compositions.

Brings Back beautifully showcases his musical maturity. He was socially conscious from his debut, and this awareness still seeps through his compositions with spoken word and rapping. Alfa Mist has a great talent for creating an atmosphere resembling spiritual jazz over languid hip-hop beats. Listen to the magnificent "Mind the Gap" and you'll understand what I mean. The courage to take new musical steps brings out the best in Alfa Mist on Brings Back. Immediately with the free-flowing opening track, "Teki," a wonderfully layered composition comes to full fruition. The arrangements sound even richer than on his previous albums, and his band, featuring veteran bassist Kaya Thomas-Dyke, drummer Jamie Houghton, and guitarist Jamie Leening, sounds just as excellent.

Nine compositions unfold over the already exquisite Hammond tones of Mist, each one possessing both adventure and musical freedom, while also being accessible, especially considering how these tracks will sound live. Beautifully delivered lyrics by Hilary Thomas overlay them, telling stories about the harsh realities of starting life in a new country. Brings Back embodies everything that has made British jazz so incredibly compelling for years. Music that explores new, exciting directions through a blend of jazz styles, sounding both groovy and captivating.

Brings Back completely recaptures the euphoria that began with Antiphon. This album, packed with music, perfectly showcases the growth of a musician/songwriter and his band. It also demonstrates that the talented Alfa Mist has become an established musician whose every album should be anticipated with great enthusiasm.
