He wrote the song &quot;A Cadillac Don&#039;t Come Easy,&quot; which was eventually rewritten as &quot;Be Thankful for What You Got&quot; (1972). He spent $900 recording the album at Omega Sound, a production company in Philadelphia. Producer John Davis (a member of the MFSB studio session group) came up with a refined arrangement, ultimately booking him time to record at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. Studio owner and chief engineer Joe Tarsia recorded and mixed the track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The session featured members of the MFSB group. The record sold nearly two million copies after its release in 1974. It was certified gold by the RIAA in May 1974. With his success as a recording artist seemingly assured, DeVaughn quit his government job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeVaughn released an album, primarily featuring religious songs. His second single, &quot;Blood Is Thicker Than Water,&quot; charted in 1974. &quot;Give the Little Man a Great Big Hand&quot; had only moderate success on the R&amp;B charts in early 1975. DeVaughn also preached live, admonishing his audience from the stage.
