UB40's "Live" is a great way to demonstrate how to record an impressive live performance. It's not just about the frenetic joy of the audience and/or the unexpected moments of any live performance; it's about the (brass) instruments, and especially that sweet, sweet saxophone that creates dozens of excellent melodies! This is what UB40 is all about! Just look at the cover! Frankenstein's monster is listening to music through his headphones in a studio! I don't think I've ever seen anything like it on an album cover.
"Live" has two live shows, each separated into its own side. Side A works well, containing many good songs like "Sardonicus," "Don't Slow Down," and "Tyler," but I think the best songs are on Side B. Side A also took me longer to memorize the songs. I really like how "One In Ten" starts and gets even wilder at the end until the lead guitar shifts from reggae to rock. I also love how UB40 incorporates other musical styles during the show. "Present Arms" is a great starter, adding a huge amount of brass, and "Burden of Shame" sounds like someone recorded someone snoring. The political message in this song is very present: "As a nation we follow blindly, no one stops to question why, our money supports an army, and a boy in Soweto dies."
