The name of this EP, Epoch, is very interesting because an epoch is “an event or time marked by an event that begins a new period or development” or “an extended period usually characterized by a significant development or by a memorable series of events”. I think, from the abundance of sexy, yet subtle and somber selections, that this EP centers around a time of lost love.
If you listen closely to this EP, you can hear the troubled serenity in Emmavie’s voice and vocal fluctuations. “Stay Here” is about running away from difficult circumstances. With “Easily, I Forget,” Emmavie notes how she loses the memory of a situation she once longed for. Meanwhile, “Fly Away” brings up the feeling of falling in love with someone. So, with all that is given, Emmavie works to bring delicate emotion into her work.
Alfa Mist also delivers a production that easily fits the mood Emmavie’s vocals evoke. Take “Insomnia” for example. It mainly features rhymes by Alfa with Emmavie in the chorus. But the atmosphere the production creates only enhances the feeling the lyrics evoke. The same can be said of every track on the EP. Alfa Mist has undoubtedly created a production that evokes a solemn feeling of love.
In conclusion, this is a beautifully solemn album that will either make people love it or hate it. Some will feel it and sway along; others will find it a bit depressing because of its strong emotional appeal. Either way, the music is complex. That complexity makes for an all-encompassing listening experience. With that said, Alfa Mist and Emmavie won with an EP over a period of “losing.”
