Art is how people organize space, and music is how people organize time. I don't remember where I heard that—maybe my brother or some cheap calligraphy quote above a filtered photo of the Grand Canyon online—but it's stuck with me ever since. I like to imagine it's like a painting coming to life next to me as I walk down the street with my headphones on, or images floating past the car when you turn on the stereo, just like what you have at home.

And just as a painting can offer a glimpse into the artist's fantastic world, music can give you a small snapshot of the world of the musicians who created it. You listen to an album, and it's this place the musicians created, calling out to you from behind the speakers. But most often, it's nothing more than a window into those delightful places, something you can see and hear, but not experience.

Some albums, however, are such a clear product of their surroundings that they manage to transport you straight into the artist's world.
