Gregory Porter – (2010) Water
Porter was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Bakersfield. His mother was a pastor; he barely knew his father. His mother often played the music of Nat King Cole, which deeply impressed Gregory Porter and would inspire his musical career. After high school, he received an athletic scholarship to play American football at San Diego State University. A shoulder injury ended his professional athletic ambitions. He began singing in local jazz clubs and thus met Kamau Kenyatta, who became his musical mentor.
In 1999, Porter was cast in the musical "It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues," which was performed on Broadway and won awards. His star as a jazz singer slowly rose. In 2010, his first album, "Water," was released, produced by Kenyatta, and he broke through to an international audience.
