As the son of a preacher, he got his first singing experiences in the church choir. He first studied psychology at Ripon College, where he performed in the evenings in a singing group called 'The Indigos'. In 1962 he graduated, and went on to study 'Vocational Rehabilitation' at the University of Iowa. After this he worked as a social worker, but later he decided to become a professional singer. In California he performed with a jazz trio, led by George Duke, in small clubs. His first album was released in 1965.

Al Jarreau was in Illinois with some friends and recorded this beautiful album, his only strictly 'pure jazz' recording to date. Accompanied by pianist Cal Bezemer, bassist Gary Allen and drummer Joe Abodeely, Jarreau already sounded very recognizable. He comes across as a superior jazz singer on songs like 'My Favorite Things', 'A Sleeping Bee' and 'One Note Samba', making this little-known LP the highlight of his jazz career, even though he was apparently unhappy with its release more than 15 years later.
